We are currently in network with Aetna only as of December 1, 2025.  For other insurances, we do provide a super bill which can be submitted to insurance. We cannot take responsibility for what your health insurance will or will not cover, though most of the time medical services are covered.  We can either provide you with a super bill or “courtesy bill” your insurance, which means that we do not bill your insurance, but submit our charges on your behalf.  You are responsible for payment at the time of service.

We are also happy to set up payment plans.

Developmental pediatricians offer a wide range of services.  They evaluate for autism and ADHD.  They counsel families about treatment options.  They coordinate care between various specialties for children with medical complexity.  They discuss educational options and rights with families.  Many times parents of children with developmental differences or disabilities just want to make sure they aren’t missing any services or care that might benefit their child.  Developmental pediatricians are trained to evaluate the child as a member of the family unit and consider the values and priorities of the family in the child’s care plan.  Often families leave appointments with questions for other specialists or treating therapists or referrals for evaluation of specific symptoms.

Yes, but the Medicaid benefits do not apply.

Dr. Burns limits new patient assessments to ages 12 and under, but will follow established patients until they are 18 years and work with you on transitioning care.  If your child is over age 12 and has medical complexity, cases will be considered on an individual basis.

This depends on the nature of the visit.  Some children need a one-time diagnostic assessment and others require more frequent visits.   In many cases, the needs of the child change over time.  This is normal and expected as children grow and develop.  No one can predict your child’s future perfectly.  Initial evaluations vary from $200 for recent NICU graduates to $900 for some full autism evaluation.

We prefer you utilize the patient portal for as much communication as possible.  This allows efficient HIPPA compliant communication.

After you have seen Dr. Burns once, you can attach files to messages in the portal.

No, she cannot.  However, she will work with all providers to coordinate care.

Yes to both.  Dr. Burns can perform kindergarten readiness assessments, IQ screening, autism testing, and ADHD testing.  She does not perform full psychoeducational evaluations.  If she refers to another provider or testing company, these assessments or tests may be covered by your insurance and she makes effort to provide this information to you, but it is always advisable to verify your insurance coverage.  You are responsible for verifying if another provider is in network with your health insurance policy.

Dr. Burns does offer some genetic testing through a few independent companies which can bill your insurance.  These are usually covered by insurance subject to your out of pocket costs and deductible.  If your child requires blood tests, these can be ordered at your preferred laboratory facility and are usually covered by insurance.

Yes!  Dr. Burns has extensive medication management experience treating ADHD, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

Dr. Burns interviews parents and child and then “plays” to assist with assessment of communication and social skills.  She utilizes a variety of measures accepted by insurance companies to support her diagnostic assessment.  Usually Dr. Burns will provide you with questions for your child’s teachers or therapists before the visit.  Other times, more testing or information may be required.  She then meets with parents 2 weeks later to provide report and answer any questions.  The report is many pages long and meets full requirements for insurance coverage of autism-related services.

Common measures utilized:  CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale), KBIT (IQ screen), ABAS-2 (adaptive behavior scale), GARS-2 (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale).

After the report appointment, you will be provided with hard copies of the report as well as digital access via your child’s health records on the patient portal.

If your insurance requires specific measures, please let Dr. Burns know

NICU follow up varies based on the patient’s needs.  Most patient will see Dr. Burns every 3-4 months.  It does include a Bayley at 1 year adjusted and 2 years chronologic age.  Dr. Burns will monitor growth, feeding, development, therapy needs, care coordination, and administer autism screening.  If a full autism assessment is required, then the established patient autism fee will be charged.

No. If you have a medical emergency, please call 911 or proceed to your local emergency room.  All other medication questions or concerns can be answered the next clinic day.

Yes, if your child is enrolled in one of the subscription plans, such testing is included and you simply need to inform Dr. Burns.  If your child is new to our practice, a standard new patient charge will apply ($400).  Please tell us at the time of booking which measures your insurance company requires and Dr. Burns will incorporate at least one into her documentation.  Dr. Burns will NOT verify the exact measures your insurance company requires.  It is your responsibility to determine this information and communicate this to Dr. Burns. This appointment will also cover standard medical care/screening questions for children with autism spectrum disorders.
